Breaking News: Senior Military Officers Announce Coupe D’etat On National Television
Just a few hours ago, senior military officers made the announcement on live television in Gabon that they had taken control of the government. This will be the second attempt at a military takeover in that country within the past five years.
The first one, which was thwarted by the people of the country in 2019, resulted in the troops involved being sentenced to 15 years in prison in 2021. If the military is successful, the Bongo family dynasty, which has lasted for 56 years, would come to a dramatic end.
Ali Bongo, the current president, succeeded his father, Umar Bongo, who served as president of Gabon from 1967 until his death in 2009. Umar Bongo served as president until 2009.
Since then, the former has held the office of president, during which time he has overseen multiple fraudulent elections, the most recent of which took place five days ago and saw him emerge victorious with 52% of the total votes cast, according to the authority in charge of managing elections in the country.
After an election that was plagued by significant voting delays, the government of Gabon stopped internet access and imposed a curfew on Saturday. This was done in response to the opposition’s complaints about the election, which they believed would prevent President Ali Bongo from extending his family’s 56-year hold on power.
The outcome of the election ratcheted up the tension, which ultimately resulted in the need for military intervention. During the statement, one of the soldiers remarked, “We have decided to defend peace by putting an end to the current regime,” and the proclamation was made public.
He went on to say that this was due to “irresponsible and unpredictable governance,” which has led to a “continuing deterioration in social cohesion that risks leading the country into chaos.”
It has been alleged that President Bongo wet himself while attending a public gathering of African leaders in Paris a year ago. This can be seen in the footage that can be found here. President Bongo is also partially crippled.
