GHANA EDUCATION SERVICE IS BACK AGAIN WITH THREATS TO TEACHERS

CAUTION AGAINST THE CONTINUED USE OF CORPORAL AND INHUMANE PUNISHMENT IN SCHOOLS_20th September, 2021
The Ghana Education Service (GES) initiated the Safe Schools Programme as part of efforts aimed at making pre-tertiary schools in the country safe and secured for teaching and learning.
To this end, Management of the GES banned the use of corporal punishment in pre-tertiary schools in February, 2017 and re-emphasised it in 2019, with a directive for all teachers to adopt the Positive Discipline toolkit as the only measure for correcting misbehaviour of learners in schools.
It is however, regrettable to note in recent times, there has been increased. reported cases of use of corporal punishment of learners who misconduct themselves.
Management would like to use this opportunity to strongly advise against the continued use of corporal punishment and entreat teachers to apply measures spelt out in the Positive Discipline Toolkit and the Head Teachers’ Handbook (Appendix 2) in dealing with all discipline issues among children.
Management will not hesitate to apply the relevant sanctions consistent with the provisions of the revised Code of Conduct for staff of the Ghana Education Service, should this directive be ignored.
We count heavily on the cooperation of Directors and all other stakeholders in this respect.
Thank you.
ANTHONY BOATENG

HEADMASTER IN TROUBLE FOR LASHING A SHS FEMALE STUDENT

The headmaster of Jachie Pramso senior high school in the Bosomtwe, a district in the Ashanti religion of Ghana could face suspension for severely lashing a final year female student.

The good samaritan, Mary Amoako is a 19 years old student of the General Acts Department and her only sin was for being too generous to a half naked student.

The headmaster gave Mary countless lashes, when he finds out that she gave her jacket to one male students he punished for wearing unprescribed uniform to class.

Mary told the media that, their headmaster was angry with the male student for wearing a shirt to class, therefore he instructed the boy to take off the shirt and walk half naked to the dormitory to change into the appropriate uniform before returning to the class.

Mary out of kind heart gave out her jacket to the male student, after the headmaster left the class with the boys shirt. But the headmaster later saw the boy going to the dormitory with a jacket covering his half naked body.

So he interrogated the boy and find out that Mary gave her the jacket. At this point the headmaster decided to lash Mary Amoako heartlessly, which has left a lot of bruises on the body of this final year student.

The current code of conduct of Ghana Education Service forbids teachers from canning students.

  1. Suspension not necessary, people should understand that it part of schooling though he went overboard with the punishment, it's not enough grounds to suspend a whole Headmaster.
The girl should know that it's the effect of helping other; religiously. These bruise will be healed in no time. Please am not supporting or defending the Headmaster but we shouldn't judge out of sentiments though its painful.

  2. Well said my brother.
Why shd the female student do that , she is indirectly telling the headmaster he doesn't know what he is doing , though the headmaster over reacted

  3. Those who are saying the headmaster shld be suspended much hv a rethink over such reckless comments. There may be more to this than what we are reading now. How come a male student after being punished gets such unexplained favor from his female counterpart? Could it be that the guy is bonk*ng her on campus 🤣or what. So lets not be too sentimental so to speak and allow for proper investigation into it jumping into passing judgement on the said headmaster. Remember he is not a headmaster just by accident.
    Salaam!!!!!
