At a time when there were not enough beds available, a community health nurse in the Afram Plains South area had to deliver the baby of a pregnant lady using a tricycle.

According to Yunbow Michael Jordan, a principal community health nurse at Bonkro in the district, the facility did not even have water or delivery beds accessible to the patients.

On December 29, 2023, the patient, Justina Kwame, who was 32 years old at the time, came at the facility with the intention of giving birth to her kid. However, due to the absence of a delivery bed, he was forced to move her to the Maame Krobo clinic. Nurse Performs Delivery In Tricycle Due To Lack of Delivery Beds In Hospital

In the immediate aftermath of the delivery, the mother and the newborn were simultaneously transported to the Maame Krobo clinic in order to receive additional medical care.

The Eastern Regional Health Directorate of Ghana Health Service initiated the “Zero Tolerance for Maternal Deaths” programme in 2022 with the theme “Stop Preventable Maternal Deaths and Disability.” This effort was launched in order to address this critical topic.

Dr. Ofosu underlined that a significant number of maternal deaths are avoidable, citing problems such as a lack of blood in healthcare institutions, as well as delays in transporting and sending pregnant women due to inadequate ambulances and bad road networks.
